Untitled document 136th PREAKNESS STAKES (Odds Courtesy: Sportsbook.com) Saturday, May 21 – 6:18 p.m. EDT Pimlico Race Course – Balitmore, MD Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom was assigned post 11 as the 2-to-1 morning-line favorite for the Preakness Stakes at the post-position draw for the 136th running of the second jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. A full 14-horse field of 3-year-olds was entered for the 1 3/16-mile Preakness, which will be televised on NBC Sports, with post time set for 6:18 p.m. EDT. Other draws for the top Preakness contenders include Dialed In (9-2) in post 10, Mucho Macho Man (6-1) in post 9, and Shackleford (12-1) in post 5. Animal Kingdom won the May 7 Kentucky Derby by 2 3/4 lengths as a 20-to-1 shot. John Velazquez has the mount back aboard the colt for owner Team Valor International and trainer Graham Motion. Animal Kingdom will be trying to keep alive his hopes for the Triple Crown, which has not been swept since Affirmed did it in 1978. The third and final jewel, the Belmont Stakes, is set for June 11 in New York. ASTROLOGY – POST 1OWNER: Stonestreet Stables and George BoltonTRAINER: Steven AsmussenJOCKEY: Mike SmithRECORD: 7-3-2-2Latest Odds: 17-1 UPSIDE Classy and consistent, Astrology has never been out of the money in seven career starts at five tracks at five distances. Though he had sufficient earnings to make the Kentucky Derby field, his connections felt he wasn’t ready for the race and decided to use the Jerome as a bridge to the Preakness. In the Jerome, Astrology was close up in third down the backstretch, lost ground on the turn, and finished well enough to edge stablemateJustin Phillip for second. DOWNSIDE Sent to Southern California for the winter, Astrology got sick upon his arrival and was set back for about a month. Along with prospective starters Flashpoint, Mr. Commons and Sway Away, he is among four Preakness hopefuls yet to win beyond a mile. He was outfinished at odds-on in the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Jockey Club and made the lead in the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile Sunland Park Derby before being run down by Twice the Appeal, who was subsequently a distant 10th in the Kentucky Derby. BOTTOM LINEAfter being favored in all five starts as a 2-year-old and going off in the 5-2 neighborhood in both of his starts this year, his price will be considerably higher in the Preakness. Anything better than a 15-1 price makes a wager worth considering. NORMAN ASBJORNSON – POST 2<BROWNER: Thomas G. McClay & Harry NyeTRAINER: Chris GroveJOCKEY: Julian PimentelRECORD: 7-2-1-0 Latest Odds: 30-1 UPSIDE Each race since his maiden victory last December has been faster than the one before, and he has managed this while taking some significant class jumps. Even if he was soundly beaten by Stay Thirsty, he was a very game second in the Gotham Stakes two starts back. In the process, he finished a length ahead of Toby’s Corner, despite having to steady in deep stretch. Toby’s Corner, of course, came right back to win the Wood Memorial, handing 2-year-old champion Uncle Mo the first defeat of his career. <br> DOWNSIDE He has not yet won a stakes race of any sort and has yet to demonstrate he can be anything more than only moderately competitive with some of the better members of his generation. His most effective running style to date has been being on or right with the early lead in slow-paced routes. He will likely face a much stronger pace scenario in the Preakness, which suggests he will have to come from off the pace. He has not yet shown that he can sustain a closing rally. BOTTOM LINE He would have to manage an unforeseen major breakthrough to win, but he wouldn’t be the worst bomber to throw in underneath in trifectas and supers if his odds stay around 30-1. KING CONGIE – POST 3OWNER: West Point ThoroughbredsTRAINER: Thomas AlbertraniJOCKEY: Robby AlbaradoRECORD: 6-2-0-2 Latest Odds: 24-1 UPSIDE King Congie crossed the wire first in three consecutive races, including two stakes, but was disqualified and placed third in the Hallandale Beach two starts ago. He lost a three-horse photo by a head last time, in the Grade 1 Blue Grass. If he is asked to do so, he can stay within comfortable striking distance of the leaders, but he can also be effective as a deep closer, as he was in the Blue Grass. DOWNSIDE It is a concern that he finished eighth on dirt at Saratoga in his debut, and that he was a well-beaten fourth on dirt at Belmont in his second start. But 14 1/4 of the 20 1/2 lengths he lost by at Saratoga belonged to Uncle Mo, in his maiden win. And he missed second behind Fort Hughes by only 5 1/2 lengths second time out. Dirt may not be his preferred surface. BOTTOM LINE Although he is a talented, improving horse, bettors will probably be very sensitive to the fact that his early dirt form was much less impressive than his subsequent turf and Polytrack form. If you believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt, you’ll be getting the right price around 20-1. FLASHPOINT – POST 4OWNER: Peachtree StableTRAINER: Richard Dutrow, Jr.JOCKEY: Cornelio VelasquezRECORD: 3-2-0-0 Latest Odds: 18-1 UPSIDEHis Hutcheson victory over the winter at Gulfstream ranks as one of the top efforts by a 3-year-old this year. Making the second start of his career, Flashpoint hounded favored Travelin Man on the lead, ran that one into defeat, and pulled away to score by 7 1/4 lengths in fast time. He enters the Preakness as a fresh horse, not having raced since April 3. DOWNSIDE He lost by eight lengths to Dialed In in the Florida Derby. He is also by a sprinter in Pomeroy and out of Two Punch Lil, a Two Punch mare whose best distance was six furlongs. Those bloodlines suggest his lungs could be on fire in the late stages of the 1 3/16-mile Preakness. He also has a new trainer for the Preakness, with Wesley Ward replacing Rick Dutrow, who is dealing with licensing issues in Kentucky and New York—it’s a tough task for anyone to start a horse for the first time in a race as demanding as the Preakness. BOTTOM LINE Those with faith will be offered a price, given the presence of other Preakness speed, the inexperience of Flashpoint and a shortage of stamina in his pedigree. But it’s hard to consider this horse a bargain, even at 20-1. SHACKLEFORD – POST 5OWNER: Michael Lauffer and Bill CubbedgeTRAINER: Dale RomansJOCKEY: Jesus CastanonRECORD: 6-2-1-0 Latest Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE Shackleford led a pack of 19 horses from the start until inside the eighth pole in the Kentucky Derby—more than 90 percent of the race—before tiring late to be fourth. That followed another fine front-running effort, albeit another losing one, when he set taxing fractions in the Florida Derby before being caught on the wire by Dialed In, the eventual Kentucky Derby favorite. He is hitting his peak, and his progress hasn’t been so dramatic that a bounce would seem probable. <br> DOWNSIDE With more speed in the Preakness, he is going to have to set or press quicker fractions, and, given his racing history, there is no taking back. All of his best races have come when he has either been on the lead or within a half-length of the leader. <br> BOTTOM LINE He closed at 23-1 in the 19-horse Derby, and his odds will probably be half that in the Preakness. As long as Derby winner Animal Kingdom doesn’t get hammered at the betting windows, Shackleford could represent value at 12-1. SWAY AWAY – POST 6OWNER: Batman StableTRAINER: Jeff BondeJOCKEY: Garrett GomezRECORD: 5-1-2-0 Latest Odds: 10-1 UPSIDE Sway Away was entered in the Kentucky Derby but excluded on graded earnings, and as a result is a fresh horse coming into the Preakness. He last raced in the Arkansas Derby, and showed improved speed in what was his first start in blinkers. He shows some strong recent works and will go Saturday for a hot barn, as Jeff Bonde has compiled a 5-for-13 record in graded stakes since Jan. 1. DOWNSIDE Sway Away’s biggest question mark might be distance, as he has never won beyond five furlongs. In the 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby, he took the lead into the stretch after advancing four wide on the final turn, but was overtaken by three rivals in the late stages. Sway Away also lacks racing experience, with just five starts. <br> BOTTOM LINE Sway Away’s price in the Preakness could be driven down some by the fact that he will be reuniting with jockey Garrett Gomez. If he goes off in the 20-1 range, he merits a saver win bet and must also be used in the exotics. MIDNIGHT INTERLUDE – POST 7OWNER: Arnold ZetcherTRAINER: Bob BaffertJOCKEY: Martin GarciaRECORD: 5-2-1-1 Latest Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE Midnight Interlude hails from one of the hottest stables in the nation. Trainer Bob Baffert entered the middle of May second in earnings ($5.2 million), thanks to an outstanding 30 percent win rate and 12 graded stakes from 10 horses, including Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty. As for lightly raced (five starts) Midnight Interlude, his conspicuous upward pattern came to a screeching halt when he finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby. If that race somehow can be discounted, he fits on figures DOWNSIDE Midnight Interlude apparently was exposed when he finished in front of only three others in the Kentucky Derby. His Santa Anita Derby victory falls short under scrutiny. He was fully extended to win that slow-paced race, which was run without favorites Premier Pegasus and Jaycito. Midnight Interlude has yet to prove he can cope with legitimate fractions, which he is likely to face in the Preakness. The bottom line is that Midnight Interlude is not good enough, at least not yet. BOTTOM LINE A case might be made that Midnight Interlude is worth backing at 20-1 or higher purely on the hot-trainer angle. After all, Baffert won the Preakness a year ago with Lookin At Lucky, who also was off the board in the Derby. DANCE CITY – POST 8OWNER: Estate of Edward P. EvansTRAINER: Todd A. PletcherJOCKEY: Ramon DominguezRECORD: 4-2-1-1 Latest Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE This lightly raced Virginia-bred showed that he can handle an off track when he graduated over a sloppy/sealed strip at Gulfstream. Then, he took his show on the road to Oaklawn, where he was a prominent third in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, from which Nehro exited to finish second in the Kentucky Derby. His only other loss came when he ran second to future Wood Memorial runner-up Arthur’s Tale in his debut. <br> DOWNSIDE He has done all of his running on or near the front end, and there should be a lively pace in the Preakness, something that may soften him up. He has yet to win a stakes and is eligible for a second-level allowance. His accomplished trainer has won a Kentucky Derby and a Belmont, but not a Preakness. BOTTOM LINE Bettors shouldn’t accept anything less than 15-1 on him, unless some of the other speed doesn’t show up. Among those who are expected to run in the first flight, he might be the most likely to be in contention at the finish, so he should be used underneath in the trifecta and superfecta. MUCHO MACHO MAN – POST 9OWNER: Reeves Thoroughbred RacingTRAINER: Katherine RitvoJOCKEY: Rajiv MaraghRECORD: 8-2-3-2 Odds: 6-1 UPSIDE Although he was not in the same class as Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man was definitely getting to runner-up Nehro at the finish line. The signs of late-stretch life he showed at Churchill Downs feel like a positive sign going forward, and his race pattern suggests a horse who is not all that likely to regress on a short turnaround. He is a very late foal who still has not reached the third anniversary of his birth. Long and tall, he may be a horse who continues improving through the summer. DOWNSIDE One potential takeaway from the Kentucky Derby is that Mucho Macho Man may just not be good enough to beat Animal Kingdom. And while he is a June foal, he has gotten in more starts than most—if not all—of the Preakness field. His strengths and limitations, therefore, may be more exposed than a horse like Animal Kingdom, who has gotten fewer racing opportunities. BOTTOM LINE Mucho Macho Man might be overlooked in the Preakness. His supporters could end up finding their horse at a bargain price, perhaps in the 10-1 range. DIALED IN – POST 10OWNER: Robert V. LaPentaTRAINER: Nicholas ZitoJOCKEY: Julien LeparouxRECORD: 5-3-1-0 Odds: 5-1 UPSIDE Dialed In was consistent, with three wins and a close second from his first four races. He was last early behind a slow pace in the Kentucky Derby, and gained 9 1/2 lengths while finishing eighth of 19. That wasn’t the race his supporters were hoping to see from him as the mild 5-1 favorite, but it wasn’t a terrible performance either, considering the disadvantageous pace scenario, and the ground loss a closer is likely to experience in a 19-horse field. He should be more effective if he encounters faster fractions in the Preakness. DOWNSIDE Dialed In enjoyed the benefit of a lively pace to chase in all three of his wins—his good performances in those races should have been discounted a bit. He disappointed as the 1-5 favorite in the race in which he finished second, unable to overcome a slow pace despite being the heavy favorite in a soft field. An unexpected defeat is always cause for concern, especially when the probable reason for it has the potential to occur again. That weakness was exposed a second time in the Kentucky Derby. BOTTOM LINE His eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and the introduction of a number of new contenders in the Preakness, might combine to make his odds somewhere around the same 5-1 price in this smaller field. Factor in the chance of a faster pace, and his supporters should consider that to be a reasonable price. ANIMAL KINGDOM – POST 11OWNER: Team Valor InternationalTRAINER: H. Graham MotionJOCKEY: John VelazquezRECORD: 5-3-2-0 Sportsbook.com Latest Odds: 2-1 UPSIDE Animal Kingdom ran over his rivals at Churchill Downs after racing many lengths behind the slowest Derby pace in a quarter-century. With Flashpoint, Dance City and others expected to start, the Preakness pace is likely to be much quicker. Such front-runners as Shackleford should be coming back more quickly, which will help mitigate the shorter stretch run at Pimlico. Not that a short stretch beats Animal Kingdom. At Turfway, where the stretch run is brief, Animal Kingdom had taken the lead more than a furlong from the finish of the Spiral. He looks like a horse with a ton of stamina who is a real athlete. <br> DOWNSIDE Animal Kingdom started at Churchill after a six-week break and made only one other start in 2011, and now has only 13 days to bounce back from one the most testing races of the season. Given his limited racing foundation, skeptics might wonder if his Derby effort will lead to a bounce. BOTTOM LINE While double-digit Derby odds have evaporated, he may still offer value at 4-1 or even 7-2, but not at 3-1 or 5-2. The word “fluke” is certain to be employed. ISN’T HE PERFECT – POST 12 OWNER: Kharag StablesTRAINER: Doodnauth ShivmangalJOCKEY: UndecidedRECORD: 12-2-0-1 Latest Odds: 35-1 UPSIDE His fifth-place finishes in the Grade 1 Wood and Grade 2 Jerome show he is not completely out of his element in these tougher races; he was in the thick of things in mid-stretch in the Wood, running in second before weakening. His sire, Pleasantly Perfect, was a top-class router who won multiple Grade 1 races at 1 ¼ miles, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His dam, Reciclada, was a Grade 2 route winner, meaning he should handle this longer trip. DOWNSIDE Improving Beyer Speed Figures are all well and good, but when you’ve peaked at 84 you’re still a ways away from the type of performance it will take to win the Preakness. The average winning Beyer for the Preakness is around 109, so he will have to run a race he has yet to come close to. While he was not disgraced in the Wood and Jerome, he still hasn’t won a stakes and now dives into even deeper water, facing the Kentucky Derby winner and other proven Grade 1 horses. BOTTOM LINE Stranger things have happened, but he has his work cut out for him, and it figures to be reflected in his odds. After all, he was 65-1 in the Wood and 39-1 in the Jerome, and this spot figures to be tougher. He is likely to be around 50-1. CONCEALED IDENTITY – POST 13OWNER: Linda Gaudet & Morris BaileyTRAINER: Edmond GaudetJOCKEY: Sheldon RussellRECORD: 8-4-0-0 Latest Odds: 20-1 UPSIDE He may well have turned the corner with the addition of more ground. He found stakes foes a bit too much to handle to start the year going six furlongs, seven furlongs, and a mile, but then came a drop and move to 1 1/16 miles at Pimlico and he flourished, winning smartly. They tossed him into the May 7 Federico Tesio, and he backed it up, winning impressively again. It doesn’t hurt in the least that his sire, Smarty Jones, won the Preakness in dazzling fashion in 2004. DOWNSIDE He moves into uncharted waters class-wise. While the Tesio win was nice, now he’s facing the Kentucky Derby winner and some other proven Grade 1 performers. He has also got some work to do, as he just hasn’t run fast enough yet. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 86 for his Tesio win. While that’s nice and represents a career-topper, Animal Kingdom just earned a 103 Beyer for his Kentucky Derby victory, and the average winning Beyer for the Preakness is 109. BOTTOM LINE With the Kentucky Derby winner, the Kentucky Derby third, and beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby—as well as some well-fancied runners who did not go in the Derby—he figures to get pushed to the sidelines by players. Odds in the vicinity of 30-1 seem in prospect. MR. COMMONS – POST 14OWNER: St. George Farm Racing LLCTRAINER: John ShirreffsJOCKEY: Victor EspinozaRECORD: 4-2-0-1Latest Odds: 30-1 UPSIDE The pressing style of Mr. Commons generally leads to a comfortable trip. He improved rapidly this winter in California and continued his improving pattern by finishing third against a watered-down field in the Santa Anita Derby. He should be positioned within striking range of the pacesetters and in front of the deep closers. Having skipped the Kentucky Derby, Mr. Commons will arrive in Baltimore fresh and ready for his first start in six weeks. John Shirreffs’s record with longshot 3-year-olds in Grade 1’s suggests he should not be taken lightly: Giacomo ($102.60) won the 2005 Kentucky Derby and Tiago ($60.60) won the 2007 Santa Anita Derby. DOWNSIDE It is doubtful Mr. Commons is good enough to compete with the nation’s top main-track 3-year-olds. Neither start he made on dirt this winter indicates otherwise. His narrow win Feb. 26 in a slow-early/fast-late allowance was over an undistinguished field; the Santa Anita Derby was exposed when one-two finishers Midnight Interlude and Comma to the Top returned to finish 16th and 19th in the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Commons is best-suited for grass. His turf pedigree—by Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller—and slow-early/fast-late running style suggest his future will be on something other than dirt. <br> BOTTOM LINE Anything lower than 25-1 would be an underlay; anything higher might tempt bettors on the trainer angle. Based on traditional handicapping, however, Mr. Commons is not good enough to win the Preakness at any price.

Untitled document CHICAGO BULLS at MIAMI HEAT (SERIES TIED 1-1) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Miami -5 & 179 After closing Game 2 on a 12-2 run, the Miami Heat tied the Eastern Conference Finals at one game apiece with an 85-75 win. The two teams now head to Miami for Game 3 on Sunday night. Chicago, who was 4-0 against Miami this season before Wednesday’s loss, was outrebounded by the Heat for the first time in their five meetings this season in Game 2. After grabbing 16 more boards and scoring 23 second-chance points in Game 1, the Bulls were outrebounded by four and scored just six second-chance points in Game 2. A big part of the Bulls success in their Game 1 victory was their ability to hit jump shots in their half-court offense, averaging 1.12 points per shot and shooting 44.2 percent. Miami was much better at defending the Bulls in Game 2, as Chicago averaged just 0.60 PPS and shot 28.6 percent in the half-court offense. The Bulls shot 34% overall from the field, including 3-of-20 from three-point land, and converted just 16-of-26 free throws (62%). Derrick Rose was held to just 7-of-23 FG (30%) after going 10-for-22 (46%) in Game 1. Dwyane Wade and LeBron James combined for 53 points and shot 54 percent in Game 2, after scoring just 33 points and shooting 38 percent in Game 1. Miami was helped with the production of Udonis Haslem, scoring 13 points and grabbing five rebounds in Game 2, his first points or rebounds in a game since Nov. 22, 2010. Haslem, who had only logged seven playoff minutes before Wednesday because of a bad foot, was a big part of the Heat outscoring the Bulls 50-34 in the paint in Game 2.

Untitled document OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER at DALLAS MAVERICKS (MAVS LEAD SERIES 1-0) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Dallas -5.5 & 200.5 Dirk Nowitzki will try to lead the Mavericks to a commanding 2-0 lead Thursday night, while the Thunder and Kevin Durant would love to steal one at the American Airlines Center. Dirk Nowitzki (28.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG in playoffs) was the star in Tuesday night’s Game 1 with 48 points on 12-of-15 shooting and hit all 24 free throws he attempted. It doesn’t get more effective than 48 points on 15 shots, and Nowitzki also added six rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Dallas relies heavily on the 10-time All-Star, especially in the past 11 games. He averaged 29.8 PPG in the nine wins, but Nowitzki only had 22.5 PPG in the two losses. Jose Juan Barea (8.9 PPG, 3.5 APG in playoffs) supplied a terrific spark off the bench in Game 1, scoring 21 points on 8-of-12 FG in just 16 minutes of action. The Mavs like their chances in the series, considering Game 1 winners in a best-of-seven series have advanced 78.6 percent of the time. After a tremendous first quarter Tuesday, Oklahoma City couldn’t keep up the hot shooting against the high-scoring Mavericks. The Thunder jumped out to a 27-20 first-quarter lead and all looked well. Dallas won every quarter from then on, and won the game 121-112. Kevin Durant (29.8 PPG, 7.7 RPG in playoffs) played well, scoring 40 points (10-18 FG, 18-19 FT) with eight boards and five assists. Russell Westbrook (23.6 PPG, 6.7 APG in playoffs) couldn’t shoot the ball into the ocean, going 3-of-15 and with more turnovers (four) than assists (three). Westbrook must distribute the ball better if the Thunder want to hang around in this series. Oklahoma City has been average in road games (27-20 SU, 25-21 ATS) and also average as an underdog (15-16 SU, 17-13 ATS). But when trailing in a playoff series, the Thunder are 2-0 ATS this year and 5-1 ATS over the past three years. Oklahoma City is also 9-4-1 ATS in its past 14 meetings against the Mavs, including 6-1-1 ATS in Dallas, with the one defeat coming in Game 1. Dallas has won nine in a row against the spread at home and is 11-0 ATS in this year’s playoffs. The Mavs love to play good teams and have been successful with a 35-16 ATS (69%) record against teams with a winning record.

Untitled document TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING at BOSTON BRUINS (LIGHTNING LEAD SERIES 1-0) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Boston -150, Tampa Bay +130/5.5 under -140Facing a 3-1 series deficit against the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, the Lightning were just one loss away from being eliminated from the 2011 postseason. However, facing that possibility, Tampa Bay has taken their game to another level, and after defeating the Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, they now have won eight straight games. The Bruins lost the first two games of their Quarterfinals Series against Montreal at home, but do not wish to suffer the same fate against the Lightning, as they prepare to host Tampa Bay for Game 2 on Tuesday. <P> In his best season in the NHL with the New York Islanders in 2008-09, Sean Bergenheim scored 14 goals. After netting the first goal of this series, Bergenheim now has scored eight goals to lead all players in the 2011 postseason. His tally led to barrage of three goals in 85 seconds for Tampa, as Teddy Purcell and Brett Clark followed to put the Bruins in an early 3-0 hole. Dwayne Roloson was excellent again in goal, allowing just one goal for the first 58:59, and stopping 31 of 33 shots overall. Roloson has set an NHL record for most consecutive playoff wins in single postseason starts for goaltenders 40 or older, breaking the mark of seven previously held by Jacques Plante.<P> For the Lightning to have won eight straight games while receiving hardly any support from Steven Stamkos (one of only two players this season with 45 goals and assists – Daniel Sedin being the other) who has just four goals and two assists this postseason (two goals and an assist came in one game), speaks volumes about the production Tampa is getting from the rest of the roster. Eight other players have the same or more points than Stamkos in the postseason. If Tampa continues to get this amount of support from players not named Stamkos, it will be very tough to beat. After averaging 2.3 goals per game during their first four games this postseason, the Lightning are averaging 4.3 goals per game during their eight-game win streak. <P> Boston was caught a bit off guard by Tampa’s onslaught midway through the first period when they allowed those three goals. By the time the Bruins righted their ship, it was too late and Tampa won Game 1. Boston is no stranger to coming from behind in a series, having done so after falling behind the Canadiens 2-0 in the Quarterfinals. The Bruins desperately need Milan Lucic to step up and contribute like he did during the regular season when he led Boston with 30 goals. Lucic has more game misconducts this postseason (three) than he does goals (two), both of which came in Game 4 against the Flyers when the Bruins were up 3-0 in the series. Lucic had another game misconduct in Game 1 and his frustration level is obvious, not only to his teammates, but to fans and the opposing teams who are taking advantage of his temper to get him kicked out of games. Tim Thomas played well for all but 85 seconds in Game 1, but that was enough to cost him and the Bruins the series lead. <P> Boston has set an NHL record for most consecutive losses in the Conference Finals with nine. The last time Boston won a Conference Finals game was when it defeated the Penguins 5-4 in OT of Game 2 of the 1991 Conference Finals Series. The Bruins went on the lose the next four straight and then got swept by Pittsburgh in a rematch in the 1992 Conference Finals. Boston can still lose Game 2 and win the series, but with Tampa’s ability to score and Roloson playing at the level he is playing at, that’s something the Bruins don’t want to overcome.

Untitled document OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER at DALLAS MAVERICKS Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Dallas -6 & 194 The Western Conference Finals will not feature the Lakers or Spurs for only the second time since 1998. Instead, it will be a battle between that veteran Mavericks and the young and ambitious Thunder. After only one day of rest, Oklahoma City will have to lace up the sneakers and go play Dallas at the American Airlines Center. The Thunder finally knocked off the pesky Grizzlies on Sunday with a 105-90 win. Kevin Durant (28.9 PPG in playoffs) dropped 39 points and grabbed nine rebounds to the lead the Thunder. Russell Westbrook (23.9 PPG in playoffs) recorded his first playoff triple-double with 14 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. Westbrook only attempted 12 shots and distributed much better, which silenced many of the critics who say Westbrook shoots too much and doesn’t share the ball as the point guard. Westbrook and Jason Kidd should be a very interesting matchup with the quickness of the 22-year-old Westbrook and the experience of the 38-year-old Kidd. The short rest shouldn’t hurt the Thunder considering they are one of the youngest teams in the NBA and their top four scorers are 23 or younger. Oklahoma City was 38-17 SU (69%) and 29-24-2 ATS (55%) with just one day’s rest this season. The Dallas Mavericks come rolling into the Western Conference finals after an impressive sweep of the two-time defending champion Lakers. Eight days ago, Jason Terry and the Mavericks put on one of the best shooting performances seen in the playoffs in a long time. Terry (18.3 PPG in playoffs) hit 9-of-10 three-pointers and scored 32 points. The Mavericks as a team went 20-of-32 from behind the arc and tied a playoff record. Dallas wound up winning Game 4, 122-86 and gave itself more than a week to rest its veteran team. The Mavericks certainly needed the rest since they rely on seven players who are in their 30’s and their leader and point guard, Jason Kidd, is 38 years old. Oklahoma City has been terrific this year when underdogs of 3.5-to-6 points (8-3 ATS). During the playoffs this year, the Thunder are 6-5-1 ATS, but have been favored in most games. For the year, OKC is 17-12 ATS as an underdog and 25-20 ATS on the road. In their last 15 road games, the Thunder have notched a 10-4-1 ATS record. Dallas has been great as a favorite (35-26 ATS, 57%) but just 24-20 ATS in home games. The Mavs have been terrific in these playoffs going 10-0 ATS, giving them 14 straight ATS wins dating back to the regular season.

Such front-runners as Shackleford should be coming back more quickly, which will help mitigate the shorter stretch run at Pimlico. Not that a short stretch beats Animal Kingdom. Nehro’s strong late run in the Arkansas Derby was visually impressive, and it verified his solid effort in the Louisiana Derby, where he put himself on the map with a second-place finish. Nehro is likely to get a quick pace in the Preakness and should be picking off horses late if given a clean trip. DOWNSIDE He still has only a maiden win to his credit. He did well to finish second in the Kentucky Derby, but he had no real excuse not to beat Animal Kingdom, and he of course meets that rival again in the Preakness. Eligible for a first-level allowance, he has never beaten a stakes-quality field. BOTTOM LINE No better than second choice behind Animal Kingdom, and that’s no real bargain, considering he has never beaten winners. He is obviously capable of again cracking the exacta, but the price may be light. DIALED IN OWNER: Robert V. LaPenta TRAINER: Nicholas Zito JOCKEY: Julien Leparoux RECORD: 5-3-1-0 Odds: 6-1 UPSIDE Dialed In was consistent, with three wins and a close second from his first four races. MUCHO MACHO MANOWNER: Reeves Thoroughbred RacingTRAINER: Katherine RitvoJOCKEY: Rajiv MaraghRECORD: 8-2-3-2 Odds: 6-1 UPSIDE Although he was not in the same class as Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man was definitely getting to runner-up Nehro at the finish line. SHACKLEFORD OWNER: Michael Lauffer and Bill CubbedgeTRAINER: Dale RomansJOCKEY: Jesus CastanonRECORD: 6-2-1-0 Odds: 8-1 UPSIDE Shackleford led a pack of 19 horses from the start until inside the eighth pole in the Kentucky Derby—more than 90 percent of the race—before tiring late to be fourth. DOWNSIDE With more speed in the Preakness, he is going to have to set or press quicker fractions, and, given his racing history, there is no taking back. All of his best races have come when he has either been on the lead or within a half-length of the leader. <br> BOTTOM LINE He closed at 23-1 in the 19-horse Derby, and his odds will probably be half that in the Preakness. As long as Derby winner Animal Kingdom gets hammered at the betting windows, Shackleford could represent value. ASTROLOGYOWNER: Stonestreet Stables and George BoltonTRAINER: Steven AsmussenJOCKEY: Mike SmithRECORD: 7-3-2-2 Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE Classy and consistent, Astrology has never been out of the money in seven career starts at five tracks at five distances. Though he had sufficient earnings to make the Kentucky Derby field, his connections felt he wasn’t ready for the race and decided to use the Jerome as a bridge to the Preakness. In the Jerome, Astrology was close up in third down the backstretch, lost ground on the turn, and finished well enough to edge stablemateJustin Phillip for second.DOWNSIDE Sent to Southern California for the winter, Astrology got sick upon his arrival and was set back for about a month. BOTTOM LINE After being favored in all five starts as a 2-year-old and going off in the 5-2 neighborhood in both of his starts this year, his price will be considerably higher in the Preakness. Anything better than a 15-1 price makes a wager worth considering. <P> DANCE CITYOWNER: Estate of Edward P. EvansTRAINER: Todd A. PletcherJOCKEY: Ramon DominguezRECORD: 4-2-1-1Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE This lightly raced Virginia-bred showed that he can handle an off track when he graduated over a sloppy/sealed strip at Gulfstream. DOWNSIDE He has done all of his running on or near the front end, and there should be a lively pace in the Preakness, something that may soften him up. MIDNIGHT INTERLUDEOWNER: Arnold ZetcherTRAINER: Bob BaffertJOCKEY: Martin GarciaRECORD: 5-2-1-1Odds: 15-1 UPSIDE Midnight Interlude hails from one of the hottest stables in the nation. If that race somehow can be discounted, he fits on figures. DOWNSIDE Midnight Interlude apparently was exposed when he finished in front of only three others in the Kentucky Derby. FLASHPOINTOWNER: Peachtree StableTRAINER: Richard Dutrow, Jr.JOCKEY: Cornelio VelasquezRECORD: 3-2-0-0 Odds: 20-1 UPSIDE His Hutcheson victory over the winter at Gulfstream ranks as one of the top efforts by a 3-year-old this year. KING CONGIEOWNER: West Point ThoroughbredsTRAINER: Thomas AlbertraniJOCKEY: Robby AlbaradoRECORD: 6-2-0-2 Odds: 20-1 UPSIDE King Congie crossed the wire first in three consecutive races, including two stakes, but was disqualified and placed third in the Hallandale Beach two starts ago. If you believe he deserves the benefit of the doubt, you’ll be getting the right price around 20-1.MR. COMMONSOWNER: St. George Farm Racing LLCTRAINER: John ShirreffsJOCKEY: Victor EspinozaRECORD: 4-2-0-1 Odds: 20-1 UPSIDE The pressing style of Mr. BOTTOM LINE Anything lower than 25-1 would be an underlay; anything higher might tempt bettors on the trainer angle. Based on traditional handicapping, however, Mr. Commons is not good enough to win the Preakness at any price. SWAY AWAYOWNER: Batman StableTRAINER: Jeff BondeJOCKEY: Garrett GomezRECORD: 5-1-2-0 Odds: 20-1 UPSIDESway Away was entered in the Kentucky Derby but excluded on graded earnings, and as a result is a fresh horse coming into the Preakness. BOTTOM LINE Sway Away’s price in the Preakness could be driven down some by the fact that he will be reuniting with jockey Garrett Gomez. If he goes off in the 20-1 range, he merits a saver win bet and must also be used in the exotics. CONCEALED IDENTITYOWNER: Linda Gaudet & Morris BaileyTRAINER: Edmond GaudetJOCKEY: Sheldon RussellRECORD: 8-4-0-0 Odds: 30-1 UPSIDE He may well have turned the corner with the addition of more ground. NORMAN ASBJORNSONOWNER: Thomas G. McClay & Harry NyeTRAINER: Chris GroveJOCKEY: Julian PimentelRECORD: 7-2-1-0Odds: 30-1 UPSIDE Each race since his maiden victory last December has been faster than the one before, and he has managed this while taking some significant class jumps. DOWNSIDE He has not yet won a stakes race of any sort and has yet to demonstrate he can be anything more than only moderately competitive with some of the better members of his generation. ISN’T HE PERFECTOWNER: Kharag StablesTRAINER: Doodnauth ShivmangalJOCKEY: UndecidedRECORD: 12-2-0-1 Odds: 50-1 UPSIDE His fifth-place finishes in the Grade 1 Wood and Grade 2 Jerome show he is not completely out of his element in these tougher races; he was in the thick of things in mid-stretch in the Wood, running in second before weakening. SARATOGA REDOWNER: Robert C. Baker & William L. MackTRAINER: D. Wayne LukasJOCKEY: UndecidedRECORD: 4-1-0-0Odds: 50-1 UPSIDESaratoga Red has natural speed. His trainer, five-time Preakness winner D. Wayne Lukas, called him a “powerful but quick horse” after his debut win at Oaklawn in February. Saratoga Red was with the pace throughout the one-mile race and fought late to edge Zoebear, the eventual runner-up in the Illinois Derby. he effort earned Saratoga Red a shot in the Rebel, and he was the lone horse to go after front-running winner The Factor. Lukas in 2009 sent out Flying Private, who ran fourth in the Preakness at 25-1. DOWNSIDEHe did not race as a 2-year-old and, with only four career starts, will give up experience to most of his rivals. He also has not yet won on a fast surface; his maiden score came over a wet track. Saratoga Red is also seeking his first win beyond a mile, although his sire had success at the 1 3/16- mile trip, taking the Pimlico Special and Gulfstream Park Handicap in 2005. BOTTOM LINEHe will be one of the longer-priced horses in the Preakness, but he did win his maiden at 22-1. He also hails from a barn known for pulling its fair share of upsets in big races. While a win seems unlikely, he is a horse to use in some of the exotics.

Untitled document PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (25-14) at ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (22-19) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Philadelphia -135, St. Louis +125/7.5 under -120 The best team in the National League travels to St. Louis on Monday to take on the Cardinals. The Phillies split the eight meetings they had with St. Louis last season. Philly enters the two-game series at Busch Stadium on a two-game losing streak and a 4-5 record in its past nine games. Cliff Lee (2-3, 3.78 ERA) will take the mound for Philadelphia. He has gotten five total runs of support while he has been in the game (33 IP) in his past five starts, going 0-2 with a 3.55 ERA, 38 K’s and just five walks. He also had a five-game stretch without a victory last season for Texas, but hasn't made six consecutive winless starts since a nine-game drought in 2004 with Cleveland. He is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA and .196 opponents’ BA in his two career starts against the Cardinals. The Phillies offense, missing Chase Utley all season and now Shane Victorino (hamstring) for the next few days, has been struggling recently. They’ve managed just 16 runs while batting .193 with 37 strikeouts in losing three of five. The Cardinals come home struggling as well, as they were swept by the Reds over the weekend. They have lost four of their past five games, giving up 33 runs in the four defeats. St. Louis has played its past six games without manager Tony La Russa, who is recovering from a painful bout with shingles. He had originally targeted a return date of Monday, but it is uncertain if he'll be back. Jake Westbrook (2-3, 6.92 ERA) starts for St. Louis. Westbrook took a step back in his last start, yielding five runs on six hits in a season-low 2.1 innings of an 11-4 loss to the Cubs on Wednesday. He was coming off three straight strong outings in which he posted a 2.45 ERA, which was quite an improvement from his 9.82 ERA in his first four games. This is Westbrook’s second career start against the Phillies. He gave up four runs in five innings of Philadelphia's 7-6 comeback win over Cleveland on June 23. Albert Pujols suffered a bruised wrist after getting hit in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss at Cincinnati, but should be fine to play on Monday. He is hitting .250 with two RBI in his past five games, and has posted a .152 average with two homers and five RBI in his past nine home contests against the Phillies. If the Phillies are struggling offensively, then Jake Westbrook should be a perfect solution for them. Ryan Howard, who was born in St. Louis and went to Missouri State, hit .412 with a homer, two doubles and two RBI in four games at Busch Stadium last season. In 21 career games at Busch, Howard is batting .388 -- his highest mark at an NL park -- with eight home runs, 31 RBI and a .520 on-base percentage.

Untitled document NEW YORK YANKEES (20-18) at TAMPA BAY RAYS (23-17) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Tampa Bay -142, New York +132/8 under -115 AL East rivals collide on Monday when the first place Tampa Bay Rays, host the second place Yankees, who are closer to last place (1.5 games) than first place (2 games) in the division. This is the first meeting between two teams that both reached the postseason in 2010, and have had opposite seasons so far in 2011. After starting the season 17-9, the Yankees have fallen on hard times. New York was just swept at home by the Red Sox, to give them five straight losses and nine defeats in their past 12 games. A.J. Burnett (4-2, 3.38 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees. Burnett won his first three starts, but despite allowing 2 ER or less in four of his five starts since then, the Yankees are just 1-4 over that span. Burnett was erratic Wednesday, allowing a solo homer while walking five, hitting a batter and striking out six in seven innings of a 4-3, 11-inning loss to Kansas City. However, he has done very well in his career at Tropicana Field. He is 6-1 with a 1.55 ERA over his past eight starts in Tampa Bay, winning all four starts in a Yankees uniform. He has not allowed more than 2 ER in any of those eight starts. While the Yankees got off to a great start and have struggled recently, the Rays have taken another path. After starting the season with six straight losses and just one win in their first nine games, the Rays have won 22 of 31 (.710) to go from five games out in last place to two games up in first place. David Price (5-3, 3.12 ERA) gets the start for the Rays and the left-hander has been outstanding after getting off to a rough start. After losing his first two starts and posting a 4.85 ERA, Price is 5-1 with a 2.62 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in his past six starts. He is 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA, striking out 30 in 28 innings over four starts at home, allowing no earned runs in both victories. He's 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in eight games (seven starts) against the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts at Tropicana Field, with each resulting in Tampa Bay victories. The Rays won 10 of 18 against the Yankees last season. Despite their 22-9 record recently, they have struggled at home all season, going 10-12. Tampa also enters Monday with a two-game losing streak, getting outscored 15-3 in those to defeats to Baltimore.

Untitled document BOSTON RED SOX (17-20) at NEW YORK YANKEES (20-15) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: New York -110, Boston +100/9.5 under -115 The last time that the Yankees and Red Sox met, the Bronx Bombers were 4-2, the Red Sox were 0-6, Boston free-agent acquisition Carl Crawford (who’s making a ton of money) was batting .143, and BoSox fans were having sharp objects confiscated from them. The Sox took two of three from their visitors that weekend, got over a bumpy storm or two since, and now about five weeks later, can see the Yankees in the standings from their front porch. That is the good news. The bad news is they have two teams to catch in the standings since New York this week has fallen out of first place for the first time since April 13. Tampa Bay, who began the season 1-8 has surged to take over the top spot in the division. Boston, New York and Tampa Bay in a fight for first, summer must be near in the AL East. Friday in New York the rivals will square off again in a three-game series that has both teams bringing more than a little bit of desperation to the table. Boston (17-20) just dropped two in a row to Toronto, while the Yankees (20-15) just dropped two in a row to the Royals in a series in which Kansas City scored 15 runs in the last two games. New York has lost six of its past nine games and will send the crafty Bartolo Colon to the hill. Colon (2-1, 3.86 ERA) has been a mini blessing this year for the Bombers, as he has provided a surprisingly reliable veteran arm in the absence of the ailing Phil Hughes. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 5.3 (37 K, 7 BB), and Colon is hoping that his recent success will overshadow his career efforts versus Boston. In 26 lifetime starts against the Sox, his team is 11-15, while Colon is 8-10 with a 4.38 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. To be fair, the last time Colon started against Boston, gas prices were right around $2 per gallon, the year was 2005, and while the Charleston was not the dance of the day, 2005 was a long time ago. For some more recent history, Colon is hoping that the Sox of yesteryear do not get to him the way the 2011 Texas Rangers banged him around in his last start Saturday, when he allowed five runs and nine hits in 4.1 innings. The Yankees offense has been up and down during this nine-game stretch. While Mark Teixeira (2 runs in past 7 games) and Alex Rodriguez (.279 slugging pct. in May) have struggled of late, Curtis Granderson is leading the team (and the league) in home runs and is tops on the team in RBI with 12 and 25 respectively, while Robinson Cano is tops with a .291 BA. A-Rod homered on Thursday for the first time in 65 at-bats, but is hitting .188 with four RBI in his last 12 games. He has a 16-game hitting streak against the BoSox in which he is batting .373 with seven homers. If he is to get well, this is the team and the time to do so. Rodriguez and his teammates could be looking forward to seeing Clay Buchholz on the hill for the Red Sox. They Yankees are 5-1 when facing Buchholz, who is 1-3 with a 6.25 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in these six starts. Buchholz got rocked for eight hits and five runs (four earned) in just 3.2 innings in his last start against New York on April 9. Recently he has won two straight starts, including his last outing Saturday against the Twins where he pitched five innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and fanning six before rain ultimately limited his outing. Boston is hoping that Dustin Pedroia’s bat awakens the way it did in the last series versus New York, when he posted three straight three-hit games with a homer and five RBI against the Yankees. Crawford went 1-for-15 in that series, but is now batting .356 during an 11-game hitting streak. He's hit .338 with 11 RBI in 17 games at the new Yankee Stadium.

However, Oklahoma City was able to survive Game 4, and then destroyed the Grizzlies 99-72 in Game 5, so now Memphis is the one fighting for its life as it comes home facing elimination for the first time this postseason. The Thunder dominated Game 5, as Kevin Durant (19 points in 31 minutes) and Russell Westbrook (11 points in 25 minutes) wound up sitting for most of the fourth quarter as Oklahoma City built a 20-point lead. The Thunder bench was sensational, outscoring the Grizzlies bench 53-27. Daequan Cook (18 points, 6-of-7 FG) and James Harden (+29 rating, nine points, six rebounds, five assists) were the two standout reserves. Oklahoma City has done most of its damage through the transition game, outscoring Memphis 95-55, including a 14-point advantage in Game 5 (25-11). If the Thunder continue to get out and run, and get strong performances from their bench, they will be traveling to Dallas for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals this weekend. After rallying from down 11 points in the fourth quarter of their Game 3 win, Memphis looked determined to put the series seriously in its favor when it broke out to an 18-point lead in Game 4. However, the Thunder were able to hold off the Grizzlies and their miraculous three-point shots and hold on to win the game in triple OT. Zach Randolph was a non-factor in Game 5, with just nine points (3-9 FG) and seven rebounds. The Thunder have done a very good job holding him down at times this series (37% FG), but Randolph had two monster home games this series with 21 points and 21 rebounds in Game 3 followed by 34 points and 16 boards in Game 4. If Randolph and Marc Gasol (minus-24 rating in Game 5) don’t start opening up things down low for the outside shooters, the Grizzlies will be eliminated. It would also help if the two main outside shooters -- O.J. Mayo (38% FG in series) and Mike Conley (6-of-28 FG in past two games) found their strokes immediately.

Untitled document CHICAGO BULLS at ATLANTA HAWKS (BULLS LEAD SERIES 3-2) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Chicago -3.5 & 178.5 Derrick Rose and the Bulls try to finish off Atlanta on Thursday and move on to the Conference Finals for a date with Miami. But despite winning three games in the series by an average of 14.0 PPG, Chicago’s last game in Atlanta (Game 4) ended in a 100-88 defeat. Rose has averaged 32.0 PPG and 9.4 APG in the series versus the Hawks. Rose has been a scoring machine all series, but he has also put up 27.4 FG attempts per game to get his points. He has shot the ball better in his past three games (37.0 PPG on 47% FG) after a 39% clip in Games 1 and 2. Rose, who had eight turnovers in Game 2, has also taken much better care of the ball in his past three contests with seven total turnovers, while dishing out 27 assists. Carlos Boozer has also played well recently despite his turf toe injury, with 14.5 PPG on 52.4% FG in the past two games, which is a big jump from his 9.3 PPG on 44.8% FG in Games 1-3. Luol Deng has averaged 15.6 PPG in the series, but did not play well in the two contests in Atlanta (10.0 PPG, 8-24 FG). Joakim Noah has had a great rebounding series (11.0 RPG), but he was held scoreless in Game 5 and has just eight total points on 3-of-14 shooting in the past three contests. If Atlanta is to send this series back to Chicago for a decisive Game 7, Jamal Crawford has to step up in a big way. Crawford scored just two points on 1-of-9 shooting in the Game 5 loss, and is averaging 6.7 PPG on 23% FG in the three defeats. He has been a key factor in the pair of wins however, with 17.0 PPG on 48% FG. Joe Johnson also has some wide splits in wins and losses, with 29.0 PPG on 66% in two victories and just 13.7 PPG on 41% FG in three defeats. Jeff Teague, who replaced the injured Kirk Hinrich in the starting lineup, has been the team’s most consistent (and valuable) player this series with 17.0 PPG (56% FG), 22 assists and just five turnovers. He scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting with seven assists and no turnovers in Game 5. Josh Smith has been his typical inconsistent self throughout the series, shooting just 37% from the field. He had 23 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists in the Game 4 win, but only had 16 points, seven rebounds and one assist in Tuesday’s defeat. Al Horford has also seen his production drop considerably since the postseason began. He averaged 15.3 PPG on 56% FG in the regular season, but just 11.7 PPG on 44% FG in 11 playoff games.

Untitled document DETROIT RED WINGS at SAN JOSE SHARKS (SERIES TIED 3-3) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: San Jose -130, Detroit +110, Total: 5.5 under -120 For the second time this postseason and the third time in the past two years, a series has been pushed to a seventh game when a team was trailing three games to none. This time it’s the Detroit Red Wings who have the chance to make history. The Red Wings were the very first team to fall victim to losing four straight when up 3-0, when they lost the final four games to Toronto in the 1942 Stanley Cup Finals. Overall this is the eighth time a team has forced a Game 7 when trailing 3-0, and only three teams have won Game 7 -- the aforementioned Maple Leafs in 1942, the Islanders in 1975, and the Flyers last season. Trailing 1-0 with 10:00 left in their season, the Wings were able to rally from down a goal and avoid elimination for the second consecutive game. The Wings became the first team in NHL history to force a Game 7 by winning consecutive games—specifically Games 5 and 6—in which they trailed in the third period. Valtteri Filppula finally broke through for Detroit, scoring the GW goal with under eight minutes remaining and assisting on the tying goal. It was Filppula’s first goal and points of this series. Now the Wings have a chance to make history, and all the breaks and bounces that went the Sharks way in the first three games, have gone Detroit’s way the past three games. The Wings fired 45 shots on goal in Game 6, the most they have had in the postseason. Antti Niemi prevented Tuesday’s contest from being a blowout, and if Detroit is allowed to pepper the net with shots like it did in Game 6, this team will make history. Another game, another zero for Partick Marleau. After scoring two goals and registering two assists in the Sharks’ five-game series win over the Wings last season, Marleau has no points and is a minus-1 in this series. The Sharks had a golden chance to eliminate Detroit in Game 5 when they blew a two-goal, third-period lead, and allowed three unanswered goals in the final 18 minutes. They played like a shocked team in Game 6, getting knocked around the ice and outshot by 21 shots. Now they need to regroup or risk the humiliation of joining just two other teams in NHL history in blowing a 3-0 series lead. The good news for San Jose is that Niemi was spectacular in Game 6 after showing some bad signs in Game 5. If he repeats his performance, the Sharks will have a good chance to win. However, they need to shore up their defensive play and not let him face the barrage of shots he did in Game 6. The Sharks also need better play from Joe Thornton, who after getting three assists in Game 3, has just one assist and has a minus-3 rating in the past three games.

Untitled document SAN JOSE SHARKS at DETROIT RED WINGS (SHARKS LEAD SERIES 3-2) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Detroit -140, San Jose +120/5.5 over -115 Facing a 3-1 third period deficit in Game 5 on the road and 18 minutes from elimination, the Red Wings showed the heart and attitude of true champions. Detroit scored three unanswered goals in the final period to defeat the Sharks and force Game 6 back home in Detroit. Now the Red Wings are 60 minutes from heading back to San Jose for a Game 7, and potential history. San Jose doesn’t have to look very far for the warning signs. Twice in the last two postseasons has a team taken a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series only to be forced to play a Game 7. While the Vancouver Canucks were fortunate enough to win their Game 7 in the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Blackhawks this year, Boston was unable to hold off Philadelphia’s 3-0 series comeback in the 2010 Eastern Conference Semifinals. While the Bruins got their revenge this season by sweeping the Flyers, the Sharks are hoping they won’t be facing the same circumstances as Boston did. In order to prevent a Game 7 and potential collapse, the Sharks need to quickly compose themselves and forget about the chance they blew in Game 5. Heading into Game 4, the Sharks seemed to have received all the bounces and calls in winning the first three games by one goal. After rallying from down a goal in the third period in Game 3 and winning in OT, the Sharks smelled blood and looked to defeat and discouraged Detroit team. Even after they were swamped in the first period of Game 4 and fell behind 3-0, they managed to keep their head and tie the game in the third period, in a contest that seemed destined for another one-goal victory. However, Darren Helm put the game-winner past Antti Niemi with 1:27 remaining and gave the Wings new life. After their Game 5 collapse, the Sharks are starting to look over their shoulder and perhaps all the breaks they have been getting are now going the other way. Patrick Marleau is still a no-show in this series. After registering two goals and three assists against the Kings, Marleau has gone without a single point, and is a minus-1 for the series. After allowing just two goals in the first two games of this series, Antti Niemi has given up 11 goals in the past three games. If the Sharks want to end this series in Game 6, they need Niemi and Marleau to return to form. For the fourth time in their long playoff history, the Red Wings won a playoff game in which they trailed by at least two goals in the third period. Detroit has managed to force a Game 6 with Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen each not recording a point and combining to register a minus-5. Nicklas Lidstrom has shown why he is a first ballot Hall-of-Fame defenseman with his play this series, scoring four goals and registering two assists. No other Detroit player has more than one goal in this series. In a testament to the incredible depth the Red Wings have, nine other players have scored a goal in this series. Pavel Datsyuk assisted on three goals in Game 5, including the game-winner by Tomas Holmstrom with just over six minutes remaining. Jimmy Howard has been solid when it has counted the last two games, coming up with big saves in the third period. Mike Modano, who has played only one game this postseason, registering an assist against the Coyotes in Game 4 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals, will replace Johan Franzen in the lineup if Franzen (ankle) is unable to play in Game 6. Another sure first ballot Hall-of-Famer, Modano played in 40 regular season games for the Wings, scoring four goals and registering 11 assists. The Sharks are feeling the heat right now, but this is still a team that advanced to the Conference Finals last season and has recorded at least 105 points for five straight seasons. San Jose needs to get off to a good start and control the tempo, otherwise attitudes and the overall aura of this series, which has already started to shift to Detroit, might just overwhelm them.

Untitled document ATLANTA HAWKS at CHICAGO BULLS (SERIES TIED 2-2) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Chicago -8.5 & 181 Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls look to use their rowdy fans at the United Center to regain the series lead over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5. Josh Smith (14.7 PPG in playoffs) silenced the critics Sunday, by dropping 23 points and adding 16 rebounds with eight assists. People have never criticized Smith’s potential and ability, but rather his inconsistent play. Earlier in the series, Smith was settling for jump shots, but in the 100-88 victory Sunday, he took the ball to the rim using his uncanny jumping ability and filled-out, 6-foot-9 frame. Jeff Teague was solid once again while filling in for the injured Kirk Hinrich, scoring 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting. In the regular season Teague averaged 5.2 PPG and only played 13.8 MPG. In the series versus Chicago, Teague is averaging 16.0 PPG and playing 41.5 MPG. Teague, who is shooting 52 percent in the series, has been very effective in letting the game come to him and not forcing shots. Derrick Rose had a nice line if you were to just peek in the newspaper and see 34 points and 10 assists. The problem was that Rose attempted 32 shots, only making 12 of them. This left the critics discussing if Rose should shoot less since he is technically a point guard. Rose didn’t have much help that night with the Bulls only shooting 3-of-16 from three-point land and the usually sharp shooting Kyle Korver going 0-for-5 from downtown. Carlos Boozer (10.7 PPG in playoffs) played well in Game 4, scoring 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Luol Deng must return to form to give Rose some help in the half-court offense. Deng averaged 17.4 PPG in the regular season but has only scored 20 points combined in the past two games, making just 8-of-24 shots from the floor. Atlanta has been terrific against the spread during the postseason (7-3 ATS), but in the past three years they are just 2-9 ATS in the second round of the playoffs. The Hawks hopefully will not come out flat as they have most of the year following a win of 10+ points (8-14 ATS). Chicago is 3-11 ATS in its past 11 home games, but 12-3 ATS following an upset loss.

Untitled document VANCOUVER CANUCKS at NASHVILLE PREDATORS (CANUCKS LEAD SERIES 3-2) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Vancouver -130, Nashville +110, Total: 5 over -115 Winning the Presidents’ Trophy for the first time in franchise history clinched home-ice advantage for the Vancouver Canucks for as long as they participate in the 2011 NHL postseason. Facing the defending champions in the Western Conference Quarterfinals, the Canucks won the first three games of their best-of-seven series, but held on for dear life as the Blackhawks won Games 4-6 and then forced OT in Game 7. Vancouver was able to defeat Chicago in OT, but looked very vulnerable in barely closing the deal. After winning three of the first four games of this series, the Canucks had another chance to eliminate their opponent on Saturday and failed. They are now 1-4 in the 2011 postseason when they have a chance to eliminate their opponent. Hardly the pedigree of champions. Perhaps the Canucks enjoy testing their mettle and just how far they can go before they cause total panic in their franchise and amongst their fans. After winning both games in Nashville, the Canucks allowed a series-high four goals to the offensive-starved Predators, and now travel to Nashville hoping to eliminate the Preds again in Game 6. Ryan Kesler continued his revival in Game 5, scoring two goals. That gives him five tallies over his past three games after going his previous 17 playoff contests without scoring a goal. His five goals and nine points lead all players this series. After scoring five times against the Blackhawks, Daniel Sedin has not scored a goal this series, while combining with brother Henrik to post a minus-8 rating. Nashville won its first-ever postseason game when facing elimination on Saturday, after going 0-5 in its previous five chances. After scoring just 10 goals during the regular season, Joel Ward has now scored seven goals in the playoffs, which is tied with three others for the most among players this postseason. David Legwand scored two goals in Game 5 and now has five total in the 2011 playoffs. Entering this postseason, Legwand had just four goals in 25 games. After being unconscious in net during the first two games of this series, allowing just two goals, Pekka Rinne has become human again in the past three games. He has allowed 10 goals over that span and needs to return to his form earlier this series if the Preds want to force Game 7. The Canucks don’t want to face another pressure-packed Game 7 against a goaltender with Rinne’s ability to single-handedly eliminate an opponent. They will throw all they can at Rinne on Monday and hope that’s enough. A Vancouver win will advance the team to the Conference Finals for the first time since 1994 and the third time in franchise history. The Canucks are the only Canadian team this century to not advance to the Conference Finals. Vancouver still has to prove to me that it can consistently win when it’s time to close the door. I thought the Canucks had learned their lesson against Chicago, but apparently they still need some schooling.

Untitled document OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER at MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES (GRIZZLIES LEAD SERIES 2-1) Sportsbook.com Line/Total: Memphis -2.5 & 198 The city of Memphis has gone through a lot in the last week with flooding and other issues that has the community rallying together to support each other. A big part of that effort has been the play of the Grizzlies, as people jammed in the FedEx Forum on Saturday to forget about their troubles and support a team that is trying to make history. After their Game 3 win, the Grizzlies are now just two wins away from becoming just the second No. 8 seed to advance to the Conference Finals. The Thunder dominated most of Game 3, holding a 16-point lead in the second half, but were unable to make plays down the stretch, and now face a 2-1 series deficit. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant really struggled in the fourth quarter and overtime, making a combined 3-for-17 from the field, while Westbrook committed five of his seven turnovers during that time. The Thunder were outscored 38-17 over those final 17 minutes. After combining to score 36 points in Game 2, James Harden and Eric Maynor combined for just 14 in Game 3. Kevin Durant’s struggles on offense can be explained by Tony Allen’s defense. Durant was just 2-of-11 (18.2%) from the floor with four points when guarded by Allen in Game 3, including Durant’s potential go-ahead shot with five seconds remaining in regulation. Trailing 82-71 halfway through the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies and their crowd took over the game, outscoring the Thunder 30-9 over that timeframe. Mike Conley was outstanding, scoring 18 points and contributing on many plays over the final period and OT. After shooting 48.4 percent inside of 10 feet in the first two games of the series, the Grizzlies struggled to finish down low early, shooting 33.3 percent from inside 10 feet and getting eight such shots blocked in the first three quarters. Memphis turned it around in the fourth and overtime, shooting 56.3 percent inside of 10 feet and getting just one of its 16 attempts blocked. Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol were 6-of-21 (28.6%) inside of 10 feet in the first three quarters, attempting half of the Grizzlies shots from that distance. In the fourth quarter and overtime, Randolph and Gasol went 2-of-4 inside of 10 feet, with Mike Conley, Tony Allen and O.J. Mayo taking the bulk of the shots. Memphis was 0-6 all-time in home playoff games before this season, but has turned the tide around, winning all four of it home playoff games so far in 2011. The Grizzlies are by far the best home team ATS this season (59-31), which includes a 4-0 mark this postseason. The Thunder need to figure how to consistently get Durant good looks at the basket, or this could be a rough rest of series for his team.

The Celtics now have a chance to send this series back to South Beach tied at two, as they host Miami in Game 4. Miami’s Big Three were outscored 70-44 as the Celtics clamped down defensively, holding them to 15-for-41 (36.6%) shooting from the field. The 44 points scored by them is their lowest total of the season. Miami was also cold from three-point range, making just 5-of-23 shots. They also have not figured out how to score in the TD Garden, as three of their four lowest scoring games this season have come at Boston. Despite losing Rajon Rondo to a dislocated elbow in the second half, the Celtics still kept their head, and then miraculously watched their teammate exit the dressing room and return to the floor. Rondo has made a huge difference for the Celtics this series as they are shooting 15-for-19 from three-point range (5-of-6 in Game 3) off of his passes, compared to 12-of-33 on other shots from behind the arc. Kevin Garnett came to play in Game 3, as his 28 points was his highest output in a playoff game since dropping 33 on the Pistons in Game 5 of the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals. Garnett grabbed 18 rebounds and made 9-of-13 shots from inside 10 feet in Game 3, after taking just a combined 11 shots from that distance in the first two games of this series. Doc Rivers stated that Shaquille O’Neal (calf), Rondo (elbow) and Delonte West (shoulder) are all likely to play Monday in Game 4. O’Neal finally returned to the court Saturday, but only played eight minutes and scored two points. I didn’t think the Celtics had a performance like Game 3 in them, but they proved me wrong and showed that they still are a force to be reckoned with. After sleepwalking through the first two games of this series, Kevin Garnett showed he still can make a difference. It’s not hard to think the Celtics can repeat this performance, judging by the way they have dominated the Heat at home all season. However, Miami needs to prove it is the team to beat in Eastern Conference, and defeating the Celtics at the Garden is a huge check mark on their to-do list in order to get there.

The Premier League title race reaches a pivotal point this weekend, as Manchester United hosts Chelsea FC with the title on the line. As things currently stand in the league, Manchester United has a three-point edge over Chelsea FC, which is a flimsy edge that amounts to a match-win. But you know that already.

The Boxing world doesn’t get many MEGA-fights anymore like Pacquiao vs Mosley, and don’t think this World Welterweight Championship is necessarily as predictable as you think. DO NOT miss this fight. Just watch it!
I know after 39 years “Sugar” usually goes bad, but Shane Mosley might just be at that ripe before rotten stage.

Madrid, Spain – Arguably, the clash between Djokovic and Ferrer in the Madrid Masters quarters will be the highlight on the day’s tennis-betting card because Djokovic remains undefeated this season, and Ferrer is on hot form and has home advantage going his way as he attempts to accomplish what his peers (Nadal and Federer, namely ) have failed to do: beat Djokovic.
